The Museum of Freemasonry is the repository for the archives of United Grand Lodge of New South Wales and the Australian Capital Territory. Archive material is available for consultation BooksGavels(subject to conservation requirements) and includes material on local lodges. To minimise waiting times, it is advisable to telephone in advance of any visit on 02 9284 2809 so that staff can give you advice.

The records of United Grand Lodge of New South Wales and the Australian Capital Territory include membership registers and documents dating back to the beginning of the 19th century.

It may be possible to establish that a person was a Freemason, to provide the name of the lodge in which he was initiated, or of which he became a joining member, and his age, profession and place of residence at that date. No other personal details are recorded.

However the records are incomplete and some or all of these details may be lacking. It may be difficult to make any positive identification, particularly if little or no background information is supplied.

Archival documents cannot be made available to individuals to conduct their own searches due to the conservation needs of the records.

Requests for family history and genealogical information should be addressed to the Grand Archivist with your contact details. A search fee may be associated with any such search and the Grand Archivist will be able to assist in this area.

It is most important that any initial enquiries be made in writing so that the scope of the search can be ascertained.

Further information can be obtained on 02 9284 2809 each Tuesday. Other access times to the Archives are by arrangement with the Grand Archivist.
